I absolutely love these plants! It seems no matter what I do or don’t do they just keep on making bushels of blueberries.
Manna from God?
During the main growing season I harvest blueberries every day. It seems they grow over night. It reminds me of the story in the Old Testament about the manna in the desert. Every morning there was new food. All they had to do was scoop it up.
I am not much of a gardener. As a matter of fact I am pretty bad at best. But I love blueberries and since the price is so cheap and they come with a money back satisfaction guarantee I figured I might as well give the plants a try.
A brown thumb can grow blueberries (with the right help).
I was pleasantly surprised when my blueberry plants came. I ordered two plants. I had forgotten that I got a bonus plant in addition to the two I ordered. Since I wasn’t expecting it I gave it to Susan my next door neighbor. I am glad I did. She has quite the green thumb and gave me some tips that really boosted the blueberry production of my plants. I’ll pass on her tips in this review.
At first I was a little surprised how small the plants are. I did some reading before I bought mine and I found out that these plants are called little giants because the bushes get big (eight feet tall) and they are loaded with little blueberries. Well the plants I got were anything but big. They were little. I didn’t think I was going to get them to grow and get any kind of harvest. But that is where Sue’s help really came in. She told me that is the best size to start growing new plants.
Sue’s secret to growing giant blueberry plants and getting bushels of blueberries.
She said what I needed was a medium sized clay pot and some normal potting soil. There is no need to plant them in the ground. She said planting them this way makes sure the soil drains well enough to not drawn the plants. I had never heard of that. She was spot on. It had rained like crazy and if I had planted them outside in the ground they would have drowned like some of my vegetable plants did.
I was able to keep them inside for a couple of weeks in their new soil. That really helped them settle in. When I put them outside on the patio it was still chilly so I took a 1 gallon plastic milk carton and made a little cover for each of them. That keep them warm and really got them growing like crazy.
So if it is cold where you are I would recommend using the milk carton or something like that. If it is warm I would still recommend using new potting soil and clay pots like Sue suggested.
Now here comes the exciting part!
Once the plants started growing they really grew! They did turn into giant blueberry plants. Mine get between 7-9 feet high if I stake them up. I found it much easier to pick the blueberries if I stake up the plants.
Man do these little babies produce blueberries!
It took about three months for the blueberry blossoms to start showing up. They are so cute! The bushes were full of blossoms. Then they turned into little blueberries. They weren’t blue to begin with but they changed from green to blue pretty quickly. I couldn’t believe how fast the little blueberries grew and ripened.
I hope you love blueberries because you are going to have a ton of them!
Once the little blueberries became ripe there must have been hundreds or thousands of them. There is no way you will be able to eat all of the berries you harvest every day. I thought I could. Boy was I wrong. In addition to eating as many as we want to each day have ended up either sharing them with friends and neighbors or freezing them.
Everything tasted better with little giant blueberries on them.
You will be surprised how much fun it is to make things with blueberries. I am not much of a cook either but we have been making blueberry pies, muffins, smoothies and just about anything else you can think of with these little guys. My favorite is putting them on french vanilla ice cream. YUM!
Growing them is easy.
If you are not much of a gardener don’t worry. Take my recommendations from above, plant them, wait a few weeks and start enjoying blueberries. The plants will last years so you don’t have to worry about buying new plants every year. Just cut them back at the end of the season and put them in the garage or a cool place. They will be ready for you the next year.
